4、nticewithDr.Hammond,asurgeoninEdmonton.Afterhisfatherdiedinaridingaccident,andhismotherdiedoftuberculosis,JohnandhisbrothersmovedtoHampstead.ItwasherethatKeatsmetCharlesArmitageBrown(1787-1842)whowouldbecomeagreatfriend.Rememberinghisfirstmeetingwithhim,Brownwrites"Hisful

5、lfineeyeswerelustrouslyintellectual,andbeaming(atthattime!)".Muchgrievedbyhisdeath,Brownworkedformanyyearsonhismemoirandbiography,LifeofJohnKeats(1841).InitBrownclaimsthatitwasnotuntilKeatsreadEdmundSpencer'sFaeryQueenthatherealisedhisowngiftforthepoetic.Keatswasanavidstu

6、dentinthefieldsofmedicineandnaturalhistory,buthethenturnedhisattentionstotheliteraryworksofsuchauthorsasWilliamShakespeareandGeoffreyChaucer.KeatshadhispoemspublishedinthemagazinesofthedayattheencouragementofmanyincludingJamesHenryLeighHuntEsq.(1784-1859),editoroftheExami

7、nerandtowhomKeatsdedicatedhisfirstcollectionPoems(1817).Itincludes"ToMyBrotherGeorge","OSolitude!IfIMustWithTheeDwell",and"HappyisEngland!ICouldBeContent".UponitsappearanceaseriesofpersonalattacksdirectedatKeatsensuedinthepagesofBlackwood'sMagazine.Despitethecontroversysu
