3、tconfrontusnowareasmomentousasanyinthepast.Todaymarksthebeginningnotonlyofanewadministration,butofaperiodthatwillbeeventful,perhapsdecisive,forusandfortheworld. Itmaybeourlottoexperience,andinlargemeasuretobringabout,amajorturningpointinthelonghistoryoftheh
4、umanrace.Thefirsthalfofthiscenturyhasbeenmarkedbyunprecedentedandbrutalattacksontherightsofman,andbythetwomostfrightfulwarsinhistory.Thesupremeneedofourtimeisformentolearntolivetogetherinpeaceandharmony. Thepeoplesoftheearthfacethefuturewithgraveuncertainty
5、,composedalmostequallyofgreathopesandgreatfears.Inthistimeofdoubt,theylooktotheUnitedStatesasneverbeforeforgoodwill,strength,andwiseleadership. Itisfitting,therefore,thatwetakethisoccasiontoproclaimtotheworldtheessentialprinciplesofthefaithbywhichwelive,and
6、todeclareouraimstoallpeoples. TheAmericanpeoplestandfirminthefaithwhichhasinspiredthisNationfromthebeginning.Webelievethatallmenhavearighttoequaljusticeunderlawandequalopportunitytoshareinthecommongood.Webelievethatallmenhavetherighttofreedomofthoughtandexp
7、ression.WebelievethatallmenarecreatedequalbecausetheyarecreatedintheimageofGod. Fromthisfaithwewillnotbemoved. TheAmericanpeopledesire,andaredeterminedtoworkfor,aworldinwhichallnationsandallpeoplesarefreetogovernthemselvesastheyseefit,andtoachieveadecentan
