4、ntheU.S.ordenouncedasanextremelydisruptivetechnologythatwouldchangehighereducationasweknowit.Now,ayearlater,werealizethetruthisprobablysomewhereinbetween.MOOCscertainlyattractedtheattentionofthehighereducationcommunity,theyfosteredagreatdealofinnovation,experimentation,discussionanddebate,an
5、dtheygaveusavisionofhowwemightscaleeducationwithquality.Formanypeopletheyalsoappeartohavelegitimizedonlineteachingandlearning,aneducationalpracticethathasexistedforfifteenyearsormore.Ofcourse,thedynamicsofdevelopingabusinessmodeltofinanceMOOCsinasustainablewayandintegratingthisformatintotrad
6、itionaldegreeprogramsarestillevolving.OneofthemostpromisingaspectsofMOOCsisthatassessmentofstudentlearninghasbecomecentraltoanyconversation.InthisnewMOOCworld,assessmentisnotan“after-the-factaddon,”butmustbefullyconsideredandintegratedfromthebeginningofcoursedesign.Inthisway,MOOCsprovideanop
7、portunityfortheassessmentcommunitytomovetothecenterinoneofthemostexcitingandpotentiallyimportantconversationsemerginginhighereducationtoday.DescriptionandHistoryIntheonlineeducationworld,theacronym,“MOOC,”isnotthatnew.Itwascoinedin2008foranonlineco
