2、indynasty(before206BC).ZhengistheforerunnerofJapanesekoto,Koreankayagum,Mongolianyatag,andVietnamesedantranh.Duetoitslonghistory,thezhenghasbeencalledguzhengorGu-Zhengwhere"Gu"standsfor"ancient"inChinese.Theguzhenghasbeenapopularinstrumentsinceancienttimesand
3、isconsideredasoneofthemainchamberaswellassoloinstrumentsofChinesetraditionalmusic.Sincethemid-19thcentury,guzhengsolorepertoirehasbeengrowingandevolvingtowardsanincreasingtechnicalcomplexity.TheChinesecharacterfor"zheng"()iscomposedoftwoparts:theupperpartmean
4、s"bamboo"()andthelowerpartis"argue"().Accordingtoalegend,therewasamasterofse(),25-stringedzither,whohadtwotalenteddaughterswholovedplayingtheinstrument.Nowtherecameatimethatthemasterbecametooold,andwantedtopasshisinstrumentovertooneofthem.However,bothdaughter
5、swantedtohaveit.Themasterfeltverysadthathehadonlyoneinstrument,andintheend,outofdesperate,hedecidedtosplittheinstrumentintotwo-onegot12strings,andtheother13.Tohisamazement,thenewinstrumentsoundsmellowandevenmorebeautifulthanitsoriginal.Thehappymastergavethene
6、winstrumentanewname"zheng"bymakingupthecharacterwiththesymbolismsrepresenting"bamboo"and"argue".Theword"zheng",thenameofthisinstrument,pronouncesthesameastheword"zheng"whichmeans"argue"or"dispute".TheoriginoftheChinesecharacterrepresentingthisinstrumentseemst
7、oindicatethattheearlyversionoftheinstrumentwasmadeofbamboo,whichisdifferentfromthatoftoday.However,thislegendarystory,thoughitmightbetrueaccordingtotheoriginoftheChinesecharacterforthisinstrument,shouldnotbetakentooseriously.Itmightwellbethecasethatthecharact
