2、anetearthisnotshrinking,buttimeandspaceis.Intheglobalvillage,nationsarelikefamiliesandcountriesarelikeneighborhoods.Timeandspacenolongerisolateorprotectnationsandgroupsfromeachother.Itnaturallyfollowsthatinterculturalcontacthasbecomemorefrequent,directand,therefore,moresignificantthaneverbefore.Wh
3、enpeopleofdifferentculturalbackgroundscommunicatewitheachother,misunderstandingsaswellasconflictscomeup.Chinahasbecomeanactivememberoftheworldcommunity,andherentryintotheWTO,isboundtobringusintomorecontactwiththeoutsideworld.Atthesametime,theEnglishlanguagehasbecomethemostwidespreadmediumofinterna
4、tionalcommunication.MoreandmoreChinesepeopleuseEnglishastheirsecondlanguage,evensomeChinesestudentsgoabroadtofurthertheireducation.ThefollowingisareportfromaBritishmagazine-TheEconomist(2003:31&51):ChinesestudentsarefloodingintoBritishuniversities.Seenfromcloseto,Britain’suniversitiesareinasorryst
5、ate:overcrowded,cash-strapped,anddemoralized.Butfromfarawaytheycanlookveryattractive.Theirmarketingtoforeignstudentsisexcellent,especiallyinChina,whereeducatingchildrenabroadisincreasinglyfashionable.Thelatestfirmfingers,from2001,showaround18,000ChinesestudentsinBritishhighereducation.Thatmakesthe
6、nthelargestgroupoutofatotalof143,000foreigners.Anditisa71%increaseon2000preliminaryfigurefor2002showsafurtherincreaseof67%,takingthelikelytotalover25,000.Somequestionswillariseinone’sbrains:Aretheycompatiblewiththewesternculture?38DoestheEnglishlanguagetheyhavelearnedinChinaenablethemtocommunicate
