3、并有了一個(gè)女兒小珠兒，這種行為觸犯了加爾文教第七條戒律，被判被通奸罪，并要佩帶代表這一意思的紅字“A”。雖然海絲特拒不吐露同犯，但是，海絲特的丈夫齊林沃斯，一個(gè)偽善的學(xué)者開始了他罪惡的報(bào)復(fù)，他刺探他妻子的情人的內(nèi)心并使其遭受精神折磨，神父最終吐露真情，并死在海絲特的懷抱。海絲特胸前的“A”字有著豐富的象征含義，并有著演變過(guò)程，從通奸（Adultery），到能干（Able），再到天使（Angel），總之，海絲特的一生由紅字濃縮；同時(shí)紅字還被人們理解為原罪（Apple），反映人生來(lái)而罪惡，它還反映了作為社會(huì)的人和自然人的沖突；另外
