2、suringthemagneticpropertiesoftheprocessstreams.Thevaluablecomponentsinthefeedtoatitaniummineralsplanthavespecificmagneticsusceptibilitiesrangingfrom-10-9m3kg-1(zircon)to10-6m3kg-1(ilmenite).However,inanindustrialenvironment,inwhichthemineraltemperaturemayrangefrom20to120°C,itisdiffi
3、culttomeasuresusceptibilitieslowerthanabout10-7m3kg-1.Hencelaboratorytestingofspotsamplesfrommagneticseparatorsiscurrentlyrequiredtoobtainaccurateperformancedata.Thisisaninherentlyslowprocessandwherefeedgradesarevariable,optimumperformanceofseparatorsisgenerallynotachieved.Thisthesi
4、sdescribesthedevelopmentofaninductance-basedinstrumentformeasuringdowntolowlevelsofmagneticsusceptibilityonlineinharshplantenvironments.Themajordifficultiesindevelopingthisdeviceweretemperatureinducedchangesintheresistance/capacitanceoftheinductancecoilandphasestabilityoftheinductan
5、cecoilexcitationcurrent.Coiltemperatureproblemsweresolvedbyusingaphysicalsmallcoilinbatchoperation.Phasestabilitywasovercomebydesigningaphaseextractionsystemthatusedthecoilexcitationphaseinformationaspartofthephaseextractionalgorithm.Investigationsweremadeintocalibrationandmeasureme
6、nterroroftheinstrument.Calibrationatlowlevelsofmagneticsusceptibilitywasperformedusingarangeofchemicalsalts.Forhighersusceptibilitiesnowelldefinedcalibrationstandardswerefoundandamethodtomeasurehighlevelsofsusceptibilitywasformulated.Themethodreliesondilutingthehighlymagneticmateria
7、lwithsalttopreventmagneticinteractionbetweenparticles.Itwasfoundthattheresolutionoftheelectronicswasthemostsignificanterrorandthehomogeneityofthesampletheleastsignificant.Plantsamplesweretestedandthedevicewasabletodeterminethezirconcontentinazirconmagneticscircuit,determinetheTiO2co
