5、ions.ButperturbationtheorycanleadtoPDEsthatasymptoticallyapproximatethephenomenaandhaveanalyticsolutions.AspecialsubclassofthesenonlinearPDEshavestablelocalizedwavescalledsolitonswithimportantapplicationsinengineeringandphysics.Thisdissertationlooksattwosuc
6、happlications:dispersiveshockwavesandshallowocean-wavesolitoninteractions.Dispersiveshockwaves(DSWs)arephysicallyimportantphenomenathatoccurinsystemsdominatedbyweakdispersionandweaknonlinearity.TheKortewegdeVries(KdV)equationistheuniversalmodelforphenomenaw
7、ithweakdispersionandweakquadraticnonlinearity.Hereweshowthatthelong-timeasymptoticsolutionoftheKdVequationforgeneralstep-likedataisasingle-phaseDSW;thisDSWisthe‘largest’possibleDSWbasedontheboundarydata.We?ndthisasymptoticsolutionusingtheinversescatteringtr
