2、aresultoftheirexposuretotheendlesspossibilitiesthatliewithintheuniverse.Oneofthemostexcitingpossibilitiesforhumankindisthatlifeexistsbeyondourownplanet.Thelevelofstudentinterestthatthistopicgeneratesprovidesanopportunitytoengagestudentsinclassactivitiesthathelpthemunderstandstellara

3、ndplanetbasedprocessesthatguidecurrentextraterrestriallifeseekingresearch.Starsprovidetheenergytofuellifeonourplanet,alongwiththeelementsusedtobuildthemoleculesthatarefundamentaltoalllivingthings.Thefirstactivityhasbeendesignedtohelpstudentsrelatestellarcharacteristicstothedevelopme

4、ntoflifeonaplanet.Inthisactivitytheconceptofa“HabitableZone”surroundingastarisintroduced.ScientistsestimatethatMarslieswithintheHabitableZoneofoursunbutdoesnotharborthediversityofcomplexlifeformsfoundonEarth.Inthesecondactivitystudentsareaskedtoresearchsomeofthephysicalcharacteristi

5、csofeachplanetalongwithsomeofthegeologicalandmeteorologicalprocessesthatoccuroneachplanetandidentifyhowthosedifferencesimpactthedevelopmentoflifeoneachplanet.Inthethirdactivitystudentswillresearchdifferentgroupsofterrestrialextremophiles.Thiswillhelpstudentstobetterunderstandhowtheb

6、oundariesoftherangeoftoleranceforlifehavebeenexpandedandhowthathasprovidednewhopethatlifecanbefoundonMars.Thefinalactivityhasbeendesignedtoconnectalltheconceptspresentedinthepreviousthreeactivities.Inthisactivitystudentswillbegivenasampleof“MartianWater”andperformaseriesofexperiment

7、stodetectthepresenceoflivingorganisms.TheactivityisdesignedtouseMarsasacontexttohelpstudentsimprovetheirunderstandingofthefunctionaldefinitionoflifeaswellasdesigningandperformingcontrolledscientificexperiments.BackgroundInformationTheactivitieshavebeendesignedtoreinforceconceptsthat
