3、pyhasprovideddiameter-selectiveobservationofcarbonnanotubesfromasamplecontainingnano-tubeswithdi?erentdiameters.Theelectronicandphononstructureofsinglewallcarbonnanotubesarereviewed,basedonboththeoreticalconsiderationsandspec-troscopicmeasurements.Thequantumpropertiesof

4、Single-WallCarbonNanotubes(SWNTs)dependonthediameterandchirality,whichisde?nedbytheindices(n,m)[1,2].Chiralityisatermusedtospecifyananotubestructure,whichdoesnothavemirrorsymmetry.ThesynthesisofaSWNTsamplewithasinglechiralityisanultimateobjectiveforcarbonnanotubephysics

5、andmaterialsciencere-search,butthisisstilldi?culttoachievewithpresentsynthesistechniques.Ontheotherhand,thediameterofSWNTscannowbecontrolledsigni?-cantlybychangingthefurnacegrowthtemperatureandcatalysts[3,4,5,6].Thus,amixtureofSWNTswithdi?erentchiralities,butwithasmallr

6、angeofnanotubediametersisthebestsamplethatcanbepresentlyobtained.ResonanceRamanspectroscopyprovidesapowerfultooltoinvestigatethegeometryofSWNTsforsuchsamplesandweshowherethatmetallicandsemiconductingcarbonnanotubescanbeseparatelyobservedintheresonantRamansignal.Inthispa

7、per,we?rstreviewtheoreticalissuesconcerningtheelectronandphononpropertiesofasingle-walledcarbonnanotube.WethendescribetheelectronicandphonondensityofstatesofSWNTs.InordertodiscussresonantRamanexperiments,wemakeaplotofthepossibleenergiesofopticaltransitionsasafunctionoft
