2、kiShellEgyptNVABSTRACTThedeepwaterareaoftheNileDeltaiswithintheeasternMediterraneanbasinontheNileDeltaConebetweentheHerodotusabyssalplaintothewestandtheLevantbasintotheeast.ThecomplexevolutionandinteractionoftheAfrican,EurasianandArabianplateshaveshapedtheLateMiocenetoRecentNileConeanditssubstratu
3、m.Thetectono-stratigraphicframeworkiscontrolledbydeep-seatedbasementstructureswithdistinctgravityandmagneticexpressions,andbytheinteractionoftheNW-trendingMisfaq-Bardawil(Temsah)andNE-trendingQattara-Eratosthenes(Rosetta)faultzones.Inaddition,significantsalt-induceddeformationofaMessinianevaporiti
4、csequenceupto4,000mthickhasoccurred,togetherwithlarge-scalerotationalblockmovement.Thedeformationalpatternislargelytheresultofmultiphasetectonicmovementsalongpre-existingbasementfaultsonthecontinentalmarginoftheNeo-Tethysocean.TheNileConeconsistsoflatePaleogenetoLateMiocenesedimentsthatpre-datethe
5、Messinianevaporites,andPliocene-Pleistocenesequences.Intheeast,thepre-saltdeposits(asmuchas3,000mthick)areprimarilydeepwatersedimentswithlocalcondensedsequencesoversyndepositionalintrabasinalhighs.ShaleoccurswestwardacrosstheRosettatrend.TheMessinianevaporiticsequenceexhibitsthreedistinctseismicfa
6、ciessuggestingcyclicdepositionwiththeoccurrenceofinterbeddedanhydrite,saltandclasticsequencesandpurehalitedeposition.DuringtheMessiniansalinitycrisis,large-scalecanyonswereexcavatedthatresultedinmultiphasecut-and-fillclasticsystems.ThePliocene-Pleistocenesequencesweredepositedinaslopetobasin-floor
7、setting.ExplorationtargetsarethePliocene-Pleistocenedeepwaterchannelandbasin-floorturbiditesandsinavarietyofstructuralsettings.Waterdepthsrangefrom800to2,800m.TheUpperMiocenesequenceoffersadditionalexplorationobj
