3、TsingHuaUniversity.Infact,IcomefromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley,whichundertheleadershipofChancellorTienChangLinhadasitsmotto:“Excellencethroughdiversity.”BecauseIservedforatimeastheChairoftheCommitteeforAsian-AmericanAffairsatBerkeley,perhapsIcouldsharewithy
4、outhemeaningofthephrase“excellencethroughdiversity”asseenfromtheperspectiveofaChineserecentlyarrivedinTaiwanfromAmerica.Indeed,fromwhatIhavereadinthepapersandseeninlocaltelevisionreports,IbelievethattheongoingdebateinTaiwanconcerningthevalueofpreservingaboriginalan
5、dHakkaculturesandlanguageshasmanysimilaritiestotheAmericanexperienceofthepastfewdacades.WhenIwasachild,theAmericanpublicpolicyofachievingpoliticalharmonyinaculturallyandlinguisticallydiversesociety,derivedbyimmigrationfrommanycountries,wastheidealofthe“meltingpot.”
