3、eagoodlook/bird’seyeviewofthepalaceandthecity).Itwasusedasanimperialpalaceforaboutfivecenturies,anditstillpreserversmanyraretreasuresandcuriosities(古董)(manypreciousthings).Today,theformerImperialPalaceisapublicmuseum,listedbyUNESCOasaWorldCulturalHeritagesitein1987.Whenweenterthroughthegate,
4、wemaygouponeofthefourtowersandthenwecanseetheoveralllayout.Rectangular(長方形)inshape,itisdividedintotwoparts,theOuterCourtandtheInnerCourt.WearenowstandinginthesouthernmostpartoftheOuterCourt.InfrontofusstandstheGateofSupermeHarmony.Thegateisguardedbyapairofbronzelions,symbolizingimperialpower
5、anddignity.(尊嚴(yán)).Theselionstatues(雕像)arethebestandthelargestoftheirtype.Theonetotheeastismale,playingwithaball.Thatrepresentsunityofthestate.Theotherisfemale,havingayounglionbesideher.Thatisasymboloflasting(永久的)imperialsuccession(延續(xù)).TheOuterCourtincludestheHallofSupremeHarmony(太和殿),andtheHal
6、lofCentralHarmony(中和殿),andtheHallofPreservingHarmony(保和殿).IntheOuterCourttheemperorexercisedhissupremepoweroverthenation.TheHallofSupremeHarmonyisthegrandestandmostimportanthallinthepalacecomplex.Itusedformostimportantactivities:theSpringFestival,theemperor’sbirthdayandenthronement.TheInnerC
