4、.S.populationwas"pluggedin"tothenewdigitalsociety,andmostAmericansfeltthattechnologicaladvanceswereimprovingtheirqualityoflife.Optimismwasthereigningtoneofthedecade.Newadvancesinscienceandtechnologyseemedtopromiseeventualsolutionstoproblemsrangingfromeliminatingt
5、oxicwastetogroceryshopping—geneticengineersdevelopedmicrobesthatwouldeatindustrialsludgeandresearchersattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology's(MIT)MediaLabworkedtodevisearefrigeratorthatcouldsensewhenitwasoutofmilkandusetheInternettoordermore.The1990sallayedthef
6、earthatatechnologicallyadvancedsocietywasnecessarilyheavilycentralized,withBigBrotherwatchingeverymove.Instead,withthecreationoftheInternetandtheWorldWideWeb,andtheiremphasisondecentralization,equality,andtheopensharingofresources,manyindividualsfoundthatgreatera
