2、fKentucky,Lexington,KY40506.AbstractDouble-ElectrodeGasMetalArcWelding(DE-GMAW)isanovelweldingprocessrecentlydevelopedtoincreaseweldingproductivitywhilemaintainingthebasemetalheatinputatadesiredlowlevel.Inthispaper,theDE-GMAWprocesswasimprovedbyreplacingitsnon-consumabletungstene
3、lectrodewithaconsumableweldingwireelectroderesultinginanewprocesscalledconsumableDE-GMAW.Tounderstandthisnewprocessanditsprospectsasaneffectivemanufacturingprocess,theauthorshavestudiedfundamentalissuesandproposedsolutionstoresolvetheproblemsencountered.Thesefundamentalissuesincl

5、nput1.IntroductionNovelprocessesareonekeytomaintainingthemanufacturingindustry’scompetitivenessandtechnologicalleadershipbyincreasingproductivityorreducingcost.Withthisinmind,severalnewweldingtechnologieshavebeendeveloped.Forexample,laserweldingcandeliververydenseenergy,thusthewe
6、ldpoolissmallbutthepenetrationisdeep.Thefillermetalisreducedresultinginhighproductivity.Thecombinationoflaserweldingandgasmetalarcwelding(GMAW)hascreatedhybridlaser-arcprocesses(Refs.1-8)tofurtherimproveproductivity.Asthemostwidelyusedprocess,GMAWhasbeenmodifiedtoobtainfasterdepo
7、sition.BecausetheweldingcurrentIinconventionalGMAWisthesamefortheanodeandcathode,increasingtheweldingcurrenttoimprovedepositionratewillalsocauseanincreaseinthebasemetalheatinput(Refs.9-11).In2addition,arcpressureisconsideredtobeproportionaltoI(Ref.12).Alargearcpressureblowsmetala
