3、tmakesmevaledictorianofmyownspecialclass…Ididthebestofeveryonewhofailed.ButIalsowanttoberecognizedastheguywhogotSteveBallmertodropoutofbusinessschool.I’mabadinfluence.That’swhyIwasinvitedtospeakatyourgraduation.IfIhadspokenatyourorientation,fewerofyoumightbeheretoday.Harvardwasjustaphenomenalexper
4、ienceforme.Academiclifewasfascinating.IusedtositinonlotsofclassesIhadn’tevensignedupfor.Anddormlifewasterrific.IlivedupatRadcliffe,inCurrierHouse.Therewerealwayslotsofpeopleinmydormroomlateatnightdiscussingthings,becauseeveryoneknewIdidn’tworryaboutgettingupinthemorning.That’showIcametobetheleader
5、oftheanti-socialgroup.Weclungtoeachotherasawayofvalidatingourrejectionofallthosesocialpeople.Radcliffewasagreatplacetolive.Thereweremorewomenupthere,andmostoftheguyswerescience-mathtypes.Thatcombinationofferedmethebestodds,ifyouknowwhatImean.ThisiswhereIlearnedthesadlessonthatimprovingyouroddsdoes
6、n’tguaranteesuccess.OneofmybiggestmemoriesofHarvardcameinJanuary1975,whenImadeacallfromCurrierHousetoacompanyinAlbuquerquethathadbegunmakingtheworld’sfirstpersonalcomputers.Iofferedtosellthemsoftware.IworriedthattheywouldrealizeIwasjustastudentinadormandhanguponme.Insteadtheysaid:“We’renotquiterea
