2、rthatledtohisbeingcalled"TheSageofAnacostia"and"TheLionofAnacostia".DouglassisoneofthemostprominentfiguresinAfricanAmericanandUnitedStateshistory.Hewasafirmbelieverintheequalityofallpeople,whetherblack,female,NativeAmerican,orrecentimmigrant.Hewasfondofsaying,"Iwouldunitewithanybod
3、ytodorightandwithnobodytodowrong."LifeasaslaveFrederickDouglassbeganhisownstorythus:"IwasborninTuckahoe,nearHillsborough,andabouttwelvemilesfromEaston,inTalbotcounty,Maryland.".FrederickAugustusWashingtonBailey,wholaterbecameknownasFrederickDouglass,wasbornaslaveinTalbotCounty,Mary
4、land,betweenHillsboroandCordova,inashackeastofTappersCornerandwestofTuckahoeCreek.[2]Hewasseparatedfromhismother,HarrietBailey,whenhewasstillaninfantandlivedwithhismaternalgrandmotherBettyBailey.HismotherdiedwhenDouglasswasaboutseven.Theidentityofhisfatherisobscure.Douglassoriginal
5、lystatedthathewastoldhisfatherwasawhiteman,perhapshismasterAaronAnthony.Laterhesaidheknewnothingofhisfather'sidentity.Atageseven,DouglasswasseparatedfromhisgrandmotherandmovedtotheWyeHouseplantation,whereAnthonyworkedasoverseer.WhenAnthonydied,DouglasswasgiventoLucretiaAuld,wifeofT
6、homasAuld.ShesentDouglasstoserveThomas'brotherHughAuldinBaltimore.WhenDouglasswasabouttwelve,HughAuld'swifeSophiastartedteachinghimthealphabetdespitethefactthatitwasagainstthelawtoteachslavestoread.WhenHughAulddiscoveredheractivity,hestronglydisapproved,sayingthatifaslavelearnedtor
7、ead,hewouldbecomedissatisfiedwithhisconditionanddesirefreedom.Douglasslaterreferredtothisstatementasthe"firstdecidedlyantislaverylecture"hehadeverheard.Asdetailedinhisautobiography,Douglasssucceededinlearningtoreadfromwhitechildrenintheneighborhoodandbyobservingthewritingsofmenwith
