3、abductedbyPluto,godoftheunderworld,hergoddessmother,Demeter,broughtdroughtandfamineupontheEarth.ItwasonlywhenPersephonewaspermittedtoreturnfromtheunderworldfortwo-thirdsoftheyearthatDemetermadetheEarthfertileonceagain.Hence,wehaveabarrenperiodwhenPersephoneisintheunderworld,thengrowtha
4、ndfruitfulnesswhenshereemergesonEarth.InhersearchforPersephone,thelegendcontinues,DemetercametoEleusis,situatedaboveabayoverlookingSalamisIslandintheSaronicGulf.Shestoppedheretomournforherlostchildbesideawelland,afterbeingofferedhospitalitybythelocalruler,Celeus,askedhimtobuildatempleo
5、namoundbesidethewell.ItwasatthistemplethattheEleusinianMysteries,ritesassociatedwithDemeter,originated.ThosechosentobeinitiatedintotheMysteriesunderwentaperiodofinstruction,swearingtokeepsecretnotonlywhattheyweretaughtbutalsowhattheywitnessedwithinthetempleonceinitiated.EleusinianMyste
