4、alleledroleinshapingthedirectionofBuddhisthistoryduringthemedievalperiodthroughbothhisrichwritingsandhisinnovationsofmonasticritualsandregulations.Thisdissertationfocusesonseveralkeyissuesinhiswork,includingthevenerationofBuddha-relicsanditsrelationshiptoth
5、ereconstructionandrenovationofBuddhistmonasteriesasauthoritativestructuresandasgroundforthemonasticcommunity,therecreationoftheordinationplatformandordinationritual,andthewayinwhichtheBuddhistcommunityreclassifiedanddealtwithmonasticproperty.First,itdiscuss
6、esthehistoricalbackgroundofChineseBuddhismfromthefifthtotheseventhcenturies.Thisstudythenarguesthat,inreinterpretingtheimageofsouthernBuddhismasaculturaltradition,DaoxuansoughtanewmodelfortheChineseBuddhisttraditionasawhole.Morespecifically,thisstudyarguest
7、hattheritualofveneratingrelicsasacommemorativeceremonyfunctionedtoexpandthereligiouspowerofBuddhisminChinesesocietyandenhancethebondswithinthemonasticcommunity.ThisstudyalsointerpretsthecreationoftheordinationplatformasacrucialelementintherestorationoftheCh
