2、thereislittletobeexcitedaboutinthedifferencesthatcandefensiblybealludedtoinconnectionwithsuchformulations.Ontheotherhand,heinsists,theradicaldifferencesenvisionedinmuchtalkofconceptualschemesareincoherent.MuchcanbelearnedfromcarefulexaminationsofDavidson'sposition.However,Iarguet
3、hatitmistakenlypapersovertherealpossibilityofratherdeepdifferencesinbeliefs,theories,andconcepts--thesortsofdifferencesthathaveinterestedmanyproponentsofconceptualschemes.Iexaminetheformofinterpretivepractice(ortranslation)thatcanleadustounproblematicallypositsuchdifferences.Whil
4、eIagreewithDavidsonthatthedisagreementswefindininterpretationwillrestuponabackgroundoffoundagreement,thisdoesnotprecludethesortofdifferencesthatmanyhavethoughttodifferentiateconceptualschemes.DefendingarecognizablenotionofconceptualschemeinawaythatdoesnottalkpasteitherDavidson'si
5、mportantpointsorthepositionsofthosewhopositsuchschemescanbeticklish.Itisnotatallclearthatthefriendsofconceptualschemeshavethemselvessharedthesameconceptofaconceptualscheme.NorisitclearthatDavidsonhasmanagedtocriticizethemostplausiblevariantsdistillablefromthewritingsofproponents.
6、But,itisfairlyclearthatconceptualschemes,have,onmostaccounts,certaincentralcharacteristicsthatweshouldtakeasastartingpoint.First,conceptualschemesarelikepointsofview,whetherthereisjustoneormany,ifthereisone,therecouldbemany.Second,astheterminologyitselfsuggests,conceptualschemesa
7、reassociatedwithconcepts.Iftwopeopleemploythesameconcepts,theypresumablyareusingthesameconceptualscheme.Iftwopeoplehavedifferentconceptualschemes,theyareemployingasignificantlydifferentsetofconcepts.2Throughtheassociationwithconcepts,conceptualschemeshavecommonlycometobe1associat
