3、sedpro-ductionefficiencyovertime.However,theeffectsofseason/weathercannegativelyimpactthisgoal,whichmakesgettingasolidunderstandingofthisimpactofcriticalimportance.Inordertoquantifytheoverallproductivityimprovementsmadeintheindustry,andtodeterminehowsea
4、sonalityimpactstheindustryasawhole,anationaldatabasemustbeanalyzedforproductionchangesbetweenseasons,acrossyearsandamongdifferentproductionsystems.Theresultsfromthisstudyarebasedonagroupofporkproductioncompaniesrepresentingapproximate-ly35percentoftheU.
5、S.porkindustry.Specificallythestudysetouttoquantifytheannualproductionlevelsandthevariationassociatedwithseveralkeyperformanceindicatorsfortheporkindustryinallproductionphases(i.e.sowfarm,nursery,wean-to-finishandconventionalfinisherfacilities)from2008t
6、o2013.Additionally,seasonaleffectsassociatedwiththekeyperformanceindicatorsweremeasuredTheresultsofthisindustryanalysisindicatethattheU.S.porkindustryhasbeensuccessfulinimprovingproduc-tionefficiency.However,therearesomeperformanceindicators,suchasprewe
7、aningmortality,thatmayneedadditionalattentiontotoachieveadditionalimprovement.Itwasclearthatstepshavebeentakenonmanyfarmstoincreasethepoundsofporkproducedinagiventimeframewhilereducingfinishingmortality.This,alongwithincreasedlittersize,hasincreasedthet
8、hroughputoftheporkindustryasawhole,whileotherindustryimprove-mentsovertimecanbeattributedtobettergenetics,healthandmanagement.Theresultsfromthisanalysiscanusedtodeterminewhenmanagementpracticesneedtobeimprovedand/ormaintainedtoensurethemaximumperformanc
