3、tarerequired.SystemsEngineeringhasemergedasanintegrated,multidisciplinary,lifecycleapproachtoproductdesign,involvingbothtraditionalphysicalandbehaviour/process-orientedsciences.Currently,theknowledgebaseinthisareaislimited,andengineerswhohaveawareness/

4、traininginthisareaarenotavailableforemploymentwithinacademiaorindustry.ItisinthiscontextthattheCEIATwasfoundedatQueensUniversityBelfast,withthestrategicaimsto(a)researchintonewtechnologies,(b)developintegratedmodelsandtoolsfordesignand(c)developmodelsf

5、orknowledge/technologytransfer.Sinceitsinception,theCentrehasmadesignificantprogressinestablishingnational/internationalindustriallinkages,anddevelopingsomeofthemajorbuildingblocksforintegration.Thepaperpresentscompleted/ongoingprogrammesofresearchwith

6、intheCentre.1.IntroductionThemajorchallengesinAerospaceEngineeringinthenexttwodecades(assetoutbytheEuropean1ACAREVision2020)aretoreducenitricoxideemissionby80%,carbonmonoxide/carbondioxideby50%,noiseby50%,whileatthesametimereducingcostandimprovingsafet

7、y.Whilechallenging,theissuesarefurthercomplicatedbytrendswhichindicatethatwithinthesametwentyyearperiod,theindustrycananticipateanincreaseincapacityandcustomerdemand.Suchchallengesarepresentedinanenvironmentwheretheunderstandingofthephysicsofflighthasc
