3、mationandopeningofChinain1978.Thisprocessplaysasigni?cantimpactontheurbanenvironment,particularlyriverwaterquality.Themaingoalofthispresentstudyistoassesstheimpactofurbanactivitiesespeciallyurbanizationonriverwaterqualityforthestudyarea.SomeLandsatTMimagesfrom2000wereusedtomaptheareasf
4、ordifferentpollutionlevelsofurbanriversectionsforthestudyarea.Inaddition,animprovedequalizedsyntheticpollutionindexmethodwasutilizedtoassessthe?eldanalyticalresults.Theresultsindicatethatthereisapositivecorrelationbetweentherapidityofurbanizationandthepollutionlevelsofurbanriverwater.C

6、ionThestudyarea,thePearlRiverDeltaEconomicZone(PRDEZ),atypicalurbangroup,locatedinSouthernChina,isoneofthemostdevelopedregionsinChina.AccordingtotheregionalismofGuangdongprovince,itincludesnineadministra-tivecities.AllthecitiesdevelopclosetothePearlRiversystem(Figure1).Asaforelandofthe
7、reformationandopeninginChina,thePRDEZhasbeenexperienc-ingarapidurbanizationandindustrializationatanunprecedentedratesince1978.TheurbanizationlevelofthePRDEZincreasedfrom29.6%in1982to71.4%in2000(Populationcensusof?ceofGuangdongProvince,1984,2002).Asaresult,urbanpopulationincreasedandu
