2、ecessarilythecentralconceptintheirwork,eveninLacan’sTheEthicsofPsychoanalysisorBadiou’srecentEthics:AnEssayontheUnderstandingofEvil.Ifanything,itisdefinedvicariouslyandinrelationtoothermorecentralconcepts,suchastheworkingsofdesireforLacanandthefidelitytoanevent—
3、ortruth-process—forBadiou.Nonetheless,anexaminationofthenetworkofconceptsheldtogetherundertheumbrellaoftheethicalallowsforasharpdistinctionbetweentheworkofLacanandBadiou,onethatBadiou—himselfavowedlyindebtedtoLacan—ishesitanttomake.WhereLacanelevatesthebeautiful
4、overthegoodinhisreadingofSophocles’sAntigone,Badiouelevatesthetruth-processovertheevilbetrayalofsuchanevent,drawingonexamplesrangingfromNationalSocialismtotheloverelationbetweentwopeople.Atruth-processisasituation-specificadherence,orfidelity,totherevolutionaryp
5、otentialofaneventthatmaytakeplaceinoneofthefourrealmsofpolitics,art,science,andlove.PerhapsBadiou’sbestexampleofatruth-process—whatIwillalsorefertoasfidelitytoanevent—isonenotdescribedinthetextunderconsiderationhere:theapostlePaul’sproclamationofandfierceloyalty
6、totheeventofChrist’sresurrection.Itisintheparticularforminwhichtheethicalfidelitytoatruth-processmaybehardtodistinguishfromevilthatIwilltakeissuewithBadiou,forbothhispoliticalexamplesandhisevocationofloveasoneoffourconduitstoatruth-processreflectadifficultinflex
7、ibilityinhisextraordinarilylucidandprovocativesystem.Lacan,ontheotherhand,usesAntigone’sstrangefamilyvaluestosuggestamoreflexiblemodelofethics,onethatisfocusedontheencounterwiththeinhumanandthefragileboundarybetweenlifeanddeath.Lacan’smostsustaineddiscussionofet
