3、cir-cuitry,thescientistsbegantowonderaboutmoregeneralapplications.Couldthistechniquebeusedtodeterminethestructuralandchemicalcompositionsofordinaryobjects?Indeeditcan,theysoonconfirmed.ThusemergedanewimagingsystembearingthenameTrays.“Thisisoneofthosec
4、ases,”saysNuss,“wherewesetouttodoonethingandendedupfindingsomethingcompletelydifferentthat’smoreimportant.”“Youcanthinkofterahertzwavesasveryhighfrequencyradiowavesorverylowfrequencyinfraredwaves,”saysNuss.“Thesewaveshavetheinterestingpropertythatthey

7、eristicofspecificelements.Conventionalfar-infraredspectroscopyyieldssimilarcompositionalinformation,butitcannotproduceanimage.Inthenewtechnique,acomputerformulatescompositionaldataintoacolorpicture.NussandHufoundthatterahertzwavespassingthroughthefatt
8、yedgesofabaconslice,forexample,comeoutlookingquitedifferentfromthosemakingtheirwaythroughthemeatymiddle.Surprisingly,thesamesignal-processingalgorithmsthatthetelephonecompanydesignedforspeechrecognitionhavecomeinhandyfordecodingterahertzwaves.
