3、oreignsettlements,latertakenoverbyJapaneseinvadersatthestartofWorldWarII,wereestablishedonthenearbysmallGulangyuIsland.Manyoftheoldtreaty-portandcolonialbuildingsinWesternstylessurvive.XiamenwasdeclaredoneofChina’sfirstSpecialEconomicZonesintheearly1980’s,takingadvantageofthecity’sheritageasa
4、tradingcenterandtheproximitytoTaiwan.TodayXiamenisoneofChina’smostattractiveandbest-maintainedresortcities.Xiamenwasfoundedin1394atthebeginningoftheMingdynastyasacenterofdefenseagainstcoastalpirates.Itsprosperitywasduetoitsdeepwatershelteredharbor,thatsupplantednearbyQuanzhou,theportthathadbe
5、enthecenterofthemaritimetradewiththeIndies.Inthemid-17thcentury,XiamenandGulangyuIslandbecameastrongholdofZhengChenggong,knownintheWestasKoxinga,aMingloyalistwhoheldoutagainsttheManchuinvadersuntilbeingdriventoTaiwan.BorninJapantoaChinesepiratefatherandaJapanesemother,Zhengbecamealliedwithhol
6、doutMingprincesinthesouthwhohopedforarestoration.Hebuiltuparesistanceforceofsome7,000junksandamixedforceofthree-quartersofamilliontroopsandpirates.In1661hedrovetheDutchfromTaiwanandsetupanotherbasethere,beforehisdeathin1662.AftertheOpiumWarsXiamenbecameoneofthefirsttreatyportstobeopenedtofore
