3、ionsoftemperature(20+1°Cand6+1°C)andlow(30_+5~),medium(50+5~o)orhigh(80+_5~o)relativehumidities(RH).At20+_1°C,aerosolizedHCV/229Ewasfoundtosurvivebestat50~RHwithahalf-lifeof67-33+8-24hwhileat30~RHthevirushalf-lifewas26.76+_6.21h.At50~RHnearly20~oinfectious
4、viruswasstilldetectableat6days.HighRHat20_+1°C,ontheotherhand,wasfoundtobetheleastfavourabletothesurvivalofaerosolizedvirusandundertheseconditionsthevirushalf-lifewasonlyabout3h;noviruscouldbedetectedafter24hinaerosol.At6+1°C,ineither50~or30~RHconditions,t
5、hesurvivalofHCV/229Ewassignificantlyenhanced,withthedecaypatternessentiallysimilartothatseenat20+1°C.AtlowtemperatureandhighRH(80~),however,thesurvivalpatternwascompletelyreversed,withtheHCV/229Ehalf-lifeincreasingto86.01+5.28h,nearly30timesthatfoundat20+1
6、°CandhighRH.Althoughoptimalsurvivalat6°Cstilloccurredat50~oRH,thepronouncedstabilizingeffectoflowtemperatureonthesurvivalofHCV/229EathighRHindicatesthattheroleoftheenvironmentonthesurvivalofvirusesinairmaybemorecomplexandsignificantthanpreviouslythought.Co
7、ronavirusesarelarge,envelopedvirusescontainingasingle-strandedRNAgenomeofpositivepolarity.Inanimals,theyareknowntocausemanydiseasesofeconomicimportancewhichinvolvemainlytherespiratory,digestiveand/ornervoussystems(Macnaughton&Davies,1981;Riski&Hovi,1980;We
8、geetal.,1982).Inman,theyhavebeenreportedtoberesponsiblefor16to20~oofcommoncolds(Robb&Bond,1979)andtheyhavealsobeenisolatedfromcasesofgastroenteritis(Caul&Clarke,1975;Caul&Egglestone,1982).Whilethemechanismsof
