3、ronchitisvirus(IBV),anaviancoronavirus,havebeendetermined.TheSiproteinisthoughttocontaintheserotype-specificneutral-izationepitopesandtobethemaintargetofantigenicvariation.Analignmentwithsequencesofthreestrainspublishedpreviouslyshowedthatfromthe545aminoacidresiduesonly243
4、havebeenconserved.Clusteringofsubstitutionssuggeststhatmostserotypedeterminantsarelocatedwithinthefirst300aminoacidresiduesofSl.AphylogenetictreeoftheSlsequencesshowedveryvariableratesofdivergence.DifferencesintopologywithatreebasedonRNAse-Tlfingerprintdataindicatethatsome

6、spiratoryafflictionofyoungfiedSl,butnotwithviruslackingSl,inducesneutraliz-chickensorinadecreaseineggproduction(35).Ini-ingantibodies(5,7,29).tially,IBwaseffectivelycontrolledbyvaccinationwithToinvestigatetheserotypicvariationofIBVattheliveattenuatedIBvirus(IBV).However,th
