4、reservinglife,andonhan-dlingthings,TaoismisfullytheequalofConfucianism.InsomerespectsTaoismgoesevendeeperintotheWayoflife,somuchsothatwhileeveryancientChineseschooltaughtitsownWay(Tao)1Taoismaloneisknownbythatname.Ofcoursethename"Tao-istSchool"wasnotuseduntilthe

5、firstcenturyB.C.,2buttheteachingsofLaoTzuandChuangTzuaboutTaoweresoimpressiveandinfluentialbeforethattimethatthenamewasinevitable.WhereasinotherschoolsTaomeansasystemormoraltruth,inthisschoolitistheOne,whichisnatural,eternal,spontaneous,nameless,andindescribable

6、.Itisatoncethebeginningofallthingsandthewayinwhichallthingspursuetheircourse.WhenthisTaoispossessedbyindividualthings,itbecomesitscharacterorvirtue(te).3Theideallifefortheindividual,theidealorderforsociety,andtheidealtypeofgovernmentareallbasedonitandguidedbyit.
