3、eirtime.Theviewsexpressedarethoseoftheauthor.AcentralplankofthereformsoftheEnglishhealthservicehavebeentheencouragementofadiverserangeofproviderstobecomeinvolvedandprovidegreaterchoiceforpatients,particularlythoseexperiencingdisadvantage(DepartmentofHeath,2006).Thiscreatesarangeofnewopportunitiesf
4、orsocialenterprises,organisationsthatarenotforprofit,withsocialaimsandreceivingincomefromtradingandcontracts(SmallboneandLyon,2005)Socialenterprisesareseenaswaysofimprovingservicesastheyhavepotentialadvantagesoverotherprovidersintermsoftheirinnovativeapproaches.Theseincludeunderstandinglocalneeds,
5、involvingusersofservicesinthedesignofservices,providingchoiceandpersonalisationofservicesandtheirabilitytoreinvestanysurplusintocommunityorsocialpurposes(SEC,2006;Hewitt,2006).Whilelittleisknownoftheimpactandvalueformoneyforsocialenterprises,thereismuchevidenceoftheinnovativeabilityofsocialenterpr
6、isesintermsoffindingimprovedwaysofmeetingtheneedsofdifferentgroupsofpatientsanddevelopingnewservices(Aminetal,2002).Thispaperaimstoexaminethepotentialroleofsocialenterprisesthroughaddressingthefollowingquestions.·Whataretheexistingrolesofsocialenterprisesinhealthservicesatpresent?·Whataretheconstr
