4、onandadepression.Arecessionisrelatedtotheword“recede,”meaningtofallback.Aneconomicrecessionisafallintotaloutputthatlastsforasignificanttimeinterval.IntheU.S.,arecessionisusuallyrecognizedwhenthegrossdomesticproduct,thetotaloutputoflegallyproducedgoods,fallsduring
5、twoconsecutivequarters,i.e.forsixmonths.Aneconomyisdepressedwhenoutputfallsbelowthelong-runtrend.ThereforeadepressionbeginsduringarecessionwhenGDPfallsbelowthelong-runtrendandendsintherecoverywhenGDPrisesabovethattrend.Inthenewsmedia,“recession”isoftenusedtorefer
6、to“depression,”buthereIwillbepreciseandusethedefinitionsindicatedhere.So,theeconomyisstillindepressionwhentheeconomyrecoversandexpandsbutisstillbelowthelong-runtrend.Itwouldbemoremeaningfultomeasurearecessionasafallinper-capitaGDPratherthanintotalGDP.Inthelongrun
