3、fferent.Understandingandgraspingtheirdifferencesisquiteimportantinthecross-culturalcommunication.AndsomanystudiesdiscusstheEnglishColorWordscross-culturallanguagehabits,orusagehistory,customsandculturalbackgrounds.Amongthem,thetranslationtheoryoffunctionale
4、quivalenceissuitableandwidelyused.Ingeneralitisbesttospeakof"functionalequivalence"intermsofarangeofadequacyasnotranslationisevercompletelyequivalent.Anumberofdifferenttranslationscaninfactrepresentvaryingdegreesofequivalence.Thismeansthat"equivalence"can’t
5、beunderstoodinitsmathematicalmeaningofidentity,butonlyintermsproximity,i.e.onthebasisofdegreesofclosenesstofunctionalidentity.Suchaviewoffunctionalequivalenceimpliesdifferentdegreesofadequacyfromminimaltomaximaleffectivenessonthebasisofbothcognitiveandexper
6、ientialfactors.Aminimal,realisticdefinitionoffunctionalequivalencecouldbestatedas"thereadersofatranslatedtextshouldbeabletocomprehendittothepointthattheycanconceiveofhowtheoriginalreadersofthetextmusthaveunderstoodandappreciatedit".Anythinglessthanthisdegre
