2、reforacontestconductedwithspiritandendedwithgrace. Iamhonoredandhumbledtostandhere,wheresomanyofAmerica'sleadershavecomebeforeme,andsomanywillfollow. Wehaveaplace,allofus,inalongstory.Astorywecontinue,butwhoseendwewillnotsee.Itisthestoryofanewworldthatbecameafriendandliberatoroftheold,astoryof
3、aslave-holdingsocietythatbecameaservantoffreedom,thestoryofapowerthatwentintotheworldtoprotectbutnotpossess,todefendbutnottoconquer.ItistheAmericanstory.Astoryofflawedandfalliblepeople,unitedacrossthegenerationsbygrandandenduringideals.ThegrandestoftheseidealsisanunfoldingAmericanpromisethatever
4、yonebelongs,thateveryonedeservesachance,thatnoinsignificantpersonwaseverborn.Americansarecalledupontoenactthispromiseinourlivesandinourlaws;andthoughournationhassometimeshalted,andsometimesdelayed,wemustfollownoothercourse. Throughmuchofthelastcentury,America'sfaithinfreedomanddemocracywasarock
5、inaragingsea.Nowitisaseeduponthewind,takingrootinmanynations.Ourdemocraticfaithismorethanthecreedofourcountry,itistheinbornhopeofourhumanity,anidealwecarrybutdonotown,atrustwebearandpassalong;andevenafternearly225years,wehavealongwayyettotravel. Whilemanyofourcitizensprosper,othersdoubtthepromi
6、se,eventhejustice,ofourowncountry.TheambitionsofsomeAmericansarelimitedbyfailingschoolsandhiddenprejudiceandthecircumstancesoftheirbirth;andsometimesourdifferencesrunsodeep,itseemsweshareacontinent,butnotacountry.Wedonotacceptthis,andwewillnotallowit.Ourunity,ourunion,istheseriousworkofleadersan
