3、notsee.Itisthestoryofanewworldthatbecameafriendandliberatoroftheold,astoryofaslave-holdingsocietythatbecameaservantoffreedom,thestoryofapowerthatwentintotheworldtoprotectbutnotpossess,todefendbutnottoconquer.ItistheAmericanstory.Astoryofflawedandfalliblepeople,unite
4、dacrossthegenerationsbygrandandenduringideals.ThegrandestoftheseidealsisanunfoldingAmericanpromisethateveryonebelongs,thateveryonedeservesachance,thatnoinsignificantpersonwaseverborn.Americansarecalledupontoenactthispromiseinourlivesandinourlaws;andthoughournationha
5、ssometimeshalted,andsometimesdelayed,wemustfollownoothercourse. Throughmuchofthelastcentury,America'sfaithinfreedomanddemocracywasarockinaragingsea.Nowitisaseeduponthewind,takingrootinmanynations.Ourdemocraticfaithismorethanthecreedofourcountry,itistheinbornhopeofo
6、urhumanity,anidealwecarrybutdonotown,atrustwebearandpassalong;andevenafternearly225years,wehavealongwayyettotravel. Whilemanyofourcitizensprosper,othersdoubtthepromise,eventhejustice,ofourowncountry.TheambitionsofsomeAmericansarelimitedbyfailingschoolsandhiddenprej
7、udiceandthecircumstancesoftheirbirth;andsometimesourdifferencesrunsodeep,itseemsweshareacontinent,butnotacountry.Wedonotacceptthis,andwewillnotallowit.Ourunity,ourunion,istheseriousworkofleadersandcitizensineverygeneration;andthisismysolemnpledge,"Iwillworktobuildas
