2、eanings,whichmightcauseconfusion.Itmaymeanthelanguageofapeopleoracountry,oradialect,oralinguisticusagethatdefiesgrammaticalanalysis.Butthemostsuitabledefinitionforthispaperisasfollows.“Idiomisanexpressionestablishedinthelongusageofalanguagethatispeculiartoitselfeitheringrammaticalc
3、onstructionorinhavingameaningthatcannotbederivedasawholefromtheconjoinedmeaningsofitselements.”Englishidioms,inabroadsense,includeidiomaticphrase,proverbs,colloquialismsandslangs.Incomparison,theChineseequivalentfor“idiom”is“習(xí)語”.Itmeansakindofsetphraseorsentence,which,likeastockexp
4、ression,isoftenquotedbythecommonpeople.Chineseidiomscanberoughlydividedinto“setphrases”(成語),“commonsayings”(俗語),“proverbs”(諺語),“atwo-partallegoricalsaying”(歇后語),and“vulgarexpression”（粗俗語)Fromtheabovedefinitionsandclassificationswecanextractthreebasiccharacteristicsofidioms.(1)Anidi
