2、tothesecondorthirdgenerationafterPlato,whenhiswritingswerewellknownatAthensandAlexandria.Theyexhibitconsiderableoriginality,andareremarkableforcontainingseveralthoughtsofthesortwhichwesupposetobemodernratherthanancient,andwhichthereforehaveapeculiarinterestforus.TheSecondAlcibia
3、desshowsthatthedifficultiesaboutprayerwhichhaveperplexedChristiantheologianswerenotunknownamongthefollowersofPlato.TheEryxiaswasdoubtedbytheancientsthemselves:yetitmayclaimthedistinctionofbeing,amongallGreekorRomanwritings,theonewhichanticipatesinthemoststrikingmannerthemodernsc

5、dlybelievedbytheancientsthemselves.Thedialecticispoorandweak.Thereisnopoweroverlanguage,orbeautyofstyle;andthereisacertainabruptnessandagroikiaintheconversation,whichisveryun-Platonic.Thebestpassageisprobablythataboutthepoets:--theremarkthatthepoet,whoisofareserveddisposition,is
