3、ameworksfordecisionmakingandanalysistoprovidetoolsfortheAustralianwaterindustrytomeetthisneed.TheprojectsitswithintheWaterforaHealthyCountryUrbanWaterscapesprogram.ThispaperpresentsaselectionoftheresearchtasksthathavebeeninitiatedinthefirsteighteenmonthsoftheWaterSmartComm
4、unities–PlanningandPerformanceproject,illustratingthediversityofresearchactivitiesbeingundertaken.1.INTRODUCTIONCurrently,largevolumesofwaterareimportedintoandexportedoutofAustralia’surbanareas;onthewhole,thisapproachtotheprovisionofurbanwaterservicesinvolvesexpensiveinfra
5、structure,andplacesstressonthesurroundingterrestrialandaquaticenvironment.Thisinfrastructureisagingandincreasinglyoverloaded,andthereplacementvalueofthisinfrastructureisintheorderoftensofbillionsofdollars.Duetotheconsiderablenationalexpensethatwouldbeimposedbyreplacingande
6、xpandingthecapacityofthisinfrastructure,whilesimultaneouslyreducingit’senvironmentalimpacts,usingconventionalpractice,alternativeurbanwaterservicingapproachesmustberesearchedandimplemented.Onechallengewefaceinmovingfromcurrentpracticetointegratedurbanwatermanagementisprovi
7、dingplannersanddesignerswiththemanytoolstheyrequiretoconceiveandimplementnewwaterservicingapproaches.Tomeetthischallenge,theWaterSmartCommunities–PlanningandPerformanceprojectisdevelopinganumberoftools,whichwilltaketheformofsoftwareprograms,databasesandframeworksfordecisio
