2、icleproposesaworkable,teachable,generalisableaswellascommunicativelyefficientframeworkfortheteachingoftheintonationofEnglishtonon-nativespeakersofEnglish.ItisproposedthataframeworkofEnglishintonationshouldincludefourmajorintonationalfeatures:intonationunits
3、,stress,tones,andpitchrange.Consequently,thephenomenaofintonationinEnglishshouldhaveapieceofutterance,intonationunit,asitsbasistostudyallkindsofvoicemovementsandfeatures.Everyintonationunithasatypeoftonicstress:(unmarked)utterance-finaltonicstress,oremphati
4、c,orcontrastive,ornewinformationstress,thelastofwhichismorefrequentlyusedinutterancesgiventowh-questions.Further,intonationunitshavetypicallyoneofthesetones;fall,low-rise,high-rise,andfall-rise.Tonesareassignedtointonationunitsinrelationtothetypeofvoicemove
