4、eyMuseumofAmericanArtwascompleted40yearsago.Theprojectapproachestheexistingbuildingwithgentleness,respectingitsintegritywithoutresortingtohistoricalmimicry.Anditsglisteningformsreaffirmthecity’sfaithinprogress,suggestingthatLordFosterhasabettergriponwhatmakesNewYorktickthanarchitectswhohavewo
5、rkedinthecityalltheirlives.DesignedbyWalker&Poor,980Madison’sausterelimestonefacadesandurbanroofgardenweremeanttoreplicatethestylishlookofRockefellerCenter,completedadecadeearlier.Butthebuildingsignalstheendofanera,notabeginning.Itslow,subduedprofileistheantithesisofRockefellerCenter’ssoaring
6、monumentality,givingitacurioussenseofincompleteness.AndwithintwoyearsManhattanwouldmoveontoembraceInternationalStyleModernismwiththecompletionofLeverHouse.Thebuildingsufferedthroughamajorrenovationin1960,whentheroofgardenwasstrippedawayandreplacedwithafifthfloorwhosehorizontalwindowsclashedwi
