2、esearchtopictoboththeseismologicalandengineeringcommunitiesforalongperiod.Atpresent,intheearthquakeengineeringcommunitythetwohypotheseswhicharenotyetprovedareadopted,namelytheergodicityandstationaritysimplification.Moreover,theearthquakemotionsareviewedasstochasticprocesses,andthera
3、ndomvibrationanalysisofseismicresponsesofstructureshasalsobeenimplementedwidely.However,doearthquakegroundmotionshaveotherpropertiesbesidestheirrandomness?Aretheresomeintrinsiclawsforthegroundmotionrecordingswhicharecoveredbytheseemingirregularityanddisorder?Makingeffortstoanswerthe
4、sequestionsisworthwhile.Currently,thenon/inearscienceandnonlineartimeseriesanalysisbasedonchaosandfractaltheoryaredevelopingradically.TheyinspireUStoinvestigatethenonlinearcharacteristicsofgroundmotiontimeseriesinthedynamicalstatespace,whichcompletelydiffersfromtheprobabilisticappro
5、achforrandomprocesses.T11ispapertriestoexplorethecomplexityandirregularityofstrongearthquakegroundmotionsfromthisnewwaybasedonnonlineardynamics.Firstly,thenonlinearcharacteristicofnear-faultgroundmotion’S.a(chǎn)ccelerationrecordsisexaminedbychaotictimeseriesanalysis。Basedonthepowerspectr
6、umanalysis,principalcomponentanalysisandimproved刪method,itisillustratedqualitativelythattheanalyzedlserieshavethechaoticproperty.Then,thechaotictimeseriesanalysismethodiSappliedtoquantitativelycalculatethenonlinearcharacteristicparameterssuchascorrelationdimensionandmaximalLyapunove
7、xponent.Numericalresultsshowthatthestronggroundmotionspossessthechaoticcharacter,ratherthanthepurerandomsignal.nesevereirregularityandcomplexityofgroundmotionsarethereflectionofhighnonlinearityofearthquakeprocess.Secondly,thetypicalnear-faultgroundmotionrecordingsareselectedasthesei
