2、gwatcheshasbeenapopularpastimeforaslongaswatcheshavebeenaround.Thefirst‘watches’wereproducedinNuremberginthe16thcenturyandcouldhardlybedescribedaspocketwatches(theywereknownas‘Nurembergeggs’).Theywouldperhapsbetterbedescribedasportableclocks.Theseslowlydevelopedintowhatwewouldnowcallapocketwatch,ov
3、erthenexthundredorsoyears.EarlyWatchesusedthevergeescapement,theydidn’thaveabalance(hair)springtoregulatethebalanceandonlyanhourhandastheywerenotaccurateenoughtowarrantaminutehand.Theprospectofareasonablyaccuratepocketwatchbecamearealitywiththeintroductionofthebalancespringinthe1670s.Thisinturnlead
4、totheuseofaminutehand,asnowwatchescouldkeeptimewithin5to10minutesperday!Theystillrequiredeitherapendulumclockorsundialtosetthemby.Beforethisdate,otheradditionshadbeenmadetothebasictimetellpropertiesofthewatch,theseincludedalarms,repeatingwork(werethewatchcouldbemadetostrikethehoursbypressingalever)
5、andbeautifullyengravedanddecoratedcases.Thelatterweredesignedtodrawattentiontowhatwereusualveryexpensivepurchases.WatchcasesWatchesdatingfromthe17thand18thcenturieswereoftenhousedinpairoreventriplecases.Thiswaspartlytoprotectthewatchandpartlytomakeitlookmoreimportant.Theoutercasewasusuallyveryheavi
6、lydecoratedorcoveredintortoiseshellorshagreen(sharksskin).Thesecaseswereusuallymadeofgold,silverorgiltbrass(sometimescalledmercurialgilding).Asthe18thcenturydrewtoaclose,thecasesbecamesimplerwithgeometricdesigns(engineturning)appliedorjustplain.Gold,silverandgiltcaseswerestillthemostcommon,butinthe
7、19thcenturyafewsimplewatchescansometimesbefoundhousedinbluesteelornickelcases.Towardstheendofthe19thcenturyandintothe20thcentury,moreandmoremassproducedwatchesweremade,thesewereoftenhousedinplainsilver,gold
