2、straditionanditsmorerecentcommunalstructure,achangethatreshapesthere-lationsamongstfamilymembersofdifferentagecohortsaswellasbetweenpeasantsandcadres.itisarguedthatthistransformationintheChinesecountrysideholdsopportunitiestoimprovelivingconditionsandunmaketheconstraintsoftra
3、ditionandthemodernnation-stateonlifechancesandeverydayexperience.ThesheernumberofruralyouthinChinasuggeststhatthefutureimpactofthistransformationonsocialrealitiescouldbeenormous.TraditionalChinesesocietywascharacterizedbythesubordinationoftheyoungandwomentothedominantpatrilin
4、ealideologyandpowerstructure.Age,generation,andsexservedasthethreebasicelementsconstitutingtheChinesehierarchysysteminboththepublicandthedomesticdomains(Baker1979:15–21;Fei1992[1947]:84–86,118–119;Freedman1966).Moreover,therewasnointermediarystagebetweenchildhoodandadulthoodi
5、naperson'slifecourse;accordingtocustom,achildwasnotconsideredafullperson.Thus,oneremainedanunreli-able,immaturechilduntilmarriageandonewouldbestigmatizedifoneremainedinsuchanon-statusfortoolong(Waltner1986;Watson1989).Therefore,nianyouwuzhi(meaning“youngandignorant”)wasusedei
6、therastherationalefornottakingyoungstersseriouslyorasanexcuseforanyoftheirwrongdoings.Itwasattheturnofthiscenturythattheword“youth”(qingnian)gainedmoresocialmeaning.Thestudentmovementinthe1920sdemonstratedforthe?rsttimethatyouthwereanimportantsocialforce(Chow1960;Levy1949).Du
7、ringthe1930sand1940s,theKMTdidnotfullyexploitthepotentialoftheyouthgroup;incontrast,theCCPwasanattractivepoliticalforcetoChineseyouthinallwalksofsocietyforseveraldecades(Yang1965).After1949,theCCPandthestatecontinuedtomobilizeyouthinbothruralandurbanareasasthemainforceforthes
