2、examinedownershiptypeasavariabletoclassify?rmsinanindustry.UsingChinese?rmsofdifferentownershiptypes,wesuggestthatownershiptypecanbeaparsimoniousandimportantvariablethatmanagersusetocognitivelyclassify?rmsintodifferentstrategicgroups.Whileownershipitselfisano
3、bjectivevariable,wecontendthatdifferentownershiptypesleadtodifferentmanagerialoutlookandmentalityduetoanumberofmacroandmicrofoundationsgivingrisetovariousmanagerialcognitions.EmployingtheMilesandSnowtypology,we?ndthatstate-ownedenterprises(SOEs)andprivately-o
4、wnedenterprises(POEs)tendtoadoptdefenderandprospectorstrategies,respectively,whilecollectively-ownedenterprises(COEs)andforeign-investedenterprises(FIEs)exhibitananalyserorientationthatfallsbetweendefendersandprospectorsonthestrategycontinuum.Threestatistical
5、testssuggestthatownershiptypescanbeusedtosuccessfullypredictstrategicgroupmembershipsinChina’semergingeconomy.INTRODUCTIONStrategicgrouphasbecomeanattractivemiddlegroundbetween?rm-andindus-try-levelanalysesinstrategicmanagementresearch(seereviewsbyBognerandTh
6、omas,1993;McGeeandThomas,1986;ThomasandVenkatraman,1988).However,theconceptofstrategicgroup,looselyde?nedasagroupof?rmswithinthesameindustrymakingsimilardecisionsinkeyareas(Porter,1980,p.129),hasattractedconsiderablecriticisms.BarneyandHoskisson(1990,p.187),i
7、naperhapsmoststronglywordedcritique,challengedresearcherstoempiricallydemonstrate:(1)that‘strategicgroupsexist’;and(2)that‘?rmperformancedepends,atleastpartly,onwhichgroupa?rmisin’.Failuretosatisfythesetwoconditions,accordingly,mayleadtoaconclusionthatstrateg
