3、cations,andpromisingnewdirections.Italsoseekstofillsomeunavoidablegapsinthechapterscoverageoftopics.WhatBehavioralEconomicsTriesToDoAtthecoreofbehavioraleconomicsistheconvictionthatincreasingtherealismofthepsychologicalunderpinningsofeconomicanalysiswillimproveeconomicsonitsownterms--gen
4、eratingtheoreticalinsights,makingbetterpredictionsoffieldphenomena,andsuggestingbetterpolicy.Thisconvictiondoesnotimplyawholesalerejectionoftheneoclassicalapproachtoeconomicsbasedonutilitymaximization,equilibrium,andefficiency.Theneoclassicalapproachisusefulbecauseitprovideseconomistswit
5、hatheoreticalframeworkthatcanbeappliedtoalmostanyformofeconomic(andevennon-economic)behavior,anditmakes1Sinceitisabookofadvances,manyoftheseminalarticleswhichinfluencedthosecollectedherearenotincluded,butarenotedbelowandarewidelyreprintedelsewhere.1refutablepredictions.Manyofthesepredict
6、ionsaretestedinthechaptersofthisbook,andrejectionsofthosepredictionssuggestnewtheories.Mostofthepapersmodifyoneortwoassumptionsinstandardtheoryinthedirectionofgreaterpsychologicalrealism.Oftenthesedeparturesarenotradicalatallbecausetheyrelaxsimplifyingassumptionsthatarenotcentraltotheeco
