2、nedillnesses.Thatcoronavirusesarepotentialrespiratorypathogenshasbeendemonstratedinexperimentalstudies(1,2).However,dataontheextentandsignificanceofinfectionsbythesevirusesinhumanillnessesarestilllimited.Serologicalsurveillancecarriedoutatregularinterval
3、sonalargenumberofseratakenfromrepresentativegroupsrevealsthetotalinfectionrates(apparentandnon-appar-ent)andthelevelanddistributionoftheseroimmunityinthepopulation.Thefollowingreportofseroepidemiologicalstudiesofcoronavirusinfectionsisbaseduponobservatio
4、nsmadeinthecourseofasurveillanceprogrammeinHamburg(carriedoutsinceOctober1974)invarioussectionsofthepopulationinwhichallagegroupswererepresented.MaterialandMethodsPopulation:Atotalof3,016bloodsampleswascollectedbe-tweenOctober1974andSeptember1976(minimum
5、of100seramonthly)from"normal"healthyindividualsdividedintofourage-groups:GroupI(0to14yearsold);GroupII(15to24yearsold);GroupIII(25to59yearsold);GroupIV(60yearsold).Wecollectedasecondsampleofbloodtwomonthslaterfrom331girls,12to17yearsold.Afterinactivation
6、for30minutesat56°C,theserawerestoredat-20°Cuntilused.Allpairedseraweretestedsimultaneously.Antigen:CoronavirusstrainOC-43hasbeenisolatedbyMcln-toshetal.(3)inhumanembryotracheaorganculturefromanadultwithacold.Thestrainwassubsequentlyadaptedtosucklingmouse
7、brain.StrainOC-43antigenwaspreparedfrominfectedsucklingmousebrainaccordingtothetechniquedescribedbyKayeandDowdle(4).Serology:Hemagglutinationinhibition(HI)testswereper-formedaccordingtotheSevermicrotitretechnique(5),usingchickenredbloodcells(4).Fiftyposi
