1、TheInfluenceofTheNegativeTransferofChineseonEnglishVocabularyStudyI.IntroductionSecondLanguageAcquisition(SLA)isaverycomplexprocess.Thefactorswhichinfluencetherateandlevelofachievementofthesecondlanguagearevarious,suchasage,motivation,personalities,languageaptitude,cognitiveproc

2、ess,etc.However,themothertongueplaysaveryimportantpartinit,foritalwaysfunctionsintheprocessofSecondLanguageAcquisition,especiallyinnon-naturalisticlearningsurroundings.IntheelementarystageofSecondLanguageAcquisition,languagelearnerssimplyusetheknowledgeofthemothertongueforrefere

3、nce.AsRodEllis(Ellis,1999:37-38)hassuggested,makinguseofthemothertongueembodiesacommonpsychologicalprocess,thatis,learnershavetodependonwhattheyhavelearntintheirmothertonguetohelpthemunderstandtheknowledgeofanewlanguage.Thetransferofthemothertonguereferstotheinfluencethatthelear

4、ner’smothertongueexertsovertheacquisitionofthesecondlanguage.Thetransfertheorybelievesthat,ifthehabitsofthemothertonguearesupposedtohelptoformanddevelopthehabitsofthetargetlanguage(thesecondlanguage),ormoreconcretelytosay,ifthemothertonguepossessescertainsimilarortotallyidentica

5、lcharacteristicsasthetargetlanguage,themothertonguewillfacilitatethelearningofthetargetlanguage.Thiseffectisknownaspositivetransfer.Ontheotherhand,ifthehabitsofthemothertonguearesupposedtopreventthelearnerfromlearningthehabitsofthetargetlanguage,thatis,thelearnerhastototallydepe

6、ndonthelanguagerulesofthemothertonguetolearnthetargetlanguage,theproblemsofthenegativetransferarises.12Inmostofthewesterncountries,languagelearnerslearntheirsecondlanguagesthathavethesameoriginastheirmothertongue.Similarculturalbackgroundandlanguagecharacteristicsmakethepositive
