2、eringSunday"honoredthemothersofEngland.DuringthistimemanyoftheEngland'spoorworkedasservantsforthewealthy.Asmostjobswerelocatedfarfromtheirhomes,theservantswouldliveatthehousesoftheiremployers.OnMotheringSundaytheservantswouldhavethedayoffandwereencourage
3、dtoreturnhomeandspendthedaywiththeirmothers.Aspecialcake,calledthemotheringcake,wasoftenbroughtalongtoprovideafestivetouch.AsChristianityspreadthroughoutEuropethecelebrationchangedtohonorthe"MotherChurch"--thespiritualpowerthatgavethemlifeandprotectedthe
4、mfromharm.OvertimethechurchfestivalblendedwiththeMotheringSundaycelebration.Peoplebeganhonoringtheirmothersaswellasthechurch.IntheUnitedStatesMother'sDaywasfirstsuggestedin1872byJuliaWardHoweasadaydedicatedtopeace.In1907AnaJarvis,fromPhiladelphia,beganac
5、ampaigntoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Ms.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginiatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay.BythenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.ThehistoryOfMothers’D
6、ayMs.Jarvisandhersupportersbegantowritetoministers,businessman,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Itwassuccessful,by1911Mother'sDaywascelebratedinalmosteverystate.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaiming
