2、onot nditeasytotrusteachother.Themassivenumberofpartiesinvolved,theirheterogeneousbackgrounds,disparategoalsandindependentnaturearenotagoodbasisforthedevelopmentofrelationshipsthroughpurelysocialmechanisms.Thispaperdiscussesthetrustmanagementissuesthataris
3、einthecontextoftheXenoServerOpenPlatform:apublicin-frastructureforwide-areacomputing,capableofhostingtasksthatspanthefullspectrumofdistributedparadigms.Weexaminethemeaningandnecessityoftrustinourplatform,andpresentourtrustmanage-mentarchitecture,namedXenoT
4、rust.Oursystemallowsparticipantsofourplatformtoexpresstheirbeliefsandadvertisethem,bysubmit-tingthemtothesystem.Itprovidesaggregateinformationaboutotherparticipants'beliefs,bysupportingthedeploymentofrule-sets,de ninghowbeliefscanbecombined.XenoTrustfollow

exibleplatformoverwhichmanyoftheinterestingdistributedtrustmanagementalgorithmspresentedintheliteraturecanbeevaluatedinalarge-scalewide-areasetting.1IntroductionTheXenoServer
6、project[9]isdevelopingapublicinfrastructureforwide-areadis-tributedcomputing,creatingaworldinwhichXenoServerexecutionplatformsarescatteredacrosstheglobeandavailabletoanymemberofthepublic.Usersofourplatformareabletorunprogramsatpointsthroughoutthenetworkino
7、r-dertoreducecommunicationlatencies,avoidnetworkbottlenecksandminimizelong-haulnetworkcharges.Theycanalsouseittodeploylarge-scaleexperimen-talservices,andtoprovideanetworkpresencefortransiently-connectedmobiledevices.Resourceaccountingisanintegralpartofthe
8、XenoServerOpenPlat-form,withclientspayingfortheresourcesusedbytheirprogramsandserveroperatorsbeingpaidforrunningtheprogramsthattheyhost.Thepublicandopennatureoftheplatformimposesaneedforatrustman-agementsyste
