2、t:InChina,theEnglishsyllabusofmiddleschoolshascertainsystematicrequirementsandregulationsaboutthetrainingofEnglishwritingability.ItisclearlydemandedintheNewStandardofEnglishCurriculum(2001)thatstudentsshouldexpresstheirthoughtsandopinionsinEnglishintheprocessofwritingandla
3、ysolidfoundationfortheirdevelopmentinthefutureandlife-longstudy.However,writingteachingandlearninghavebeenneglectedforalongtimeinseniorhighschools.ManyteacherspaymoreattentiontootherEnglishskillsthantowritingandstudentsalsospendlesstimeonEnglishwritinglearningandpractice.M
4、anystudentsarecapableofconstructingcompositionsinEnglishwithveryfewgrammaticalorspellingmistakes,butthequalityoftheircompositionsisnothighenoughbecauseofthelackofcoherenceandunity.SothelackofawarenessofcohesionresultsinthepoorqualityofEnglishwriting.Asamatteroffact,bothman
5、yteachersandstudentsinseniorhighschoolsknowlittleaboutcohesiontheory,andneitherteachersnorstudentswritingteachingandlearningtextbooksmakeaclearandspecificstatementofcohesiontheoryindetail.IfbothteachersandstudentsimprovetheknowledgeofcohesionandputitintoEnglishwritingpract
6、ice,teacherscanupgradetheirwritingteachingskillsandstudentscanalsowritecompositionsofhigherquality.Cohesionisoneofthestandardsthatmakeapieceofwritingunited,consistent,andcoherent;alsoitcanreflectthewritingskillsofthewriter.Manyresearchersathomeandabroadwhohavestudiedcohesi
7、ontheoryhavemadegreatcontributionstothestudyfieldofcohesion.Basedontheirtheories,manyresearchersgiveemphasistotherelationshipbetweencohesionandwritingquality.Amongtheseresearchers,manyjustfocusonthewritingsbycollegestudentswhoareEnglish-majoredornonEnglish-majored.Thereare
