2、llionatomiccomponentsinaproductionhierarchy.Theroleofthedecisionsupporttoolistorapidlyevaluatethemanufacturingconsequencesofdesignchanges.Theimplementationasadistributedmulti-agentapplicationrunningontopofPVMisdescribed1AnalogiesbetweenManufacturingandHPCNThereareanumberofanalogiesbetweenthemanufa
3、ctureofcomplexproductssuchasships,aircraftandcarsandtheexecutionofaparallelprogram.Themanufactureofashipiscarriedoutaccordingtoaproductionplanwhichensuresthatallthecomponentscometogetherattherighttimeattherightplace.Aparallelcomputerapplicationshouldensurethattheappropriatedataisavailableontheappr
4、opriateprocessorinatimelyfashion.Itisnotsurprising,therefore,thatmanufacturingisplaguedbyindeterminacyexactlyasareparallelprogramsexecutingonmulti-processorhardware.Thishascausedanumberofresearchersinproductionengineeringtoseekinspirationinotherareaswheremanagingcomplexityandunpredictabilityisimpo
5、rtant.Anumberofnewparadigms,suchasHolonicManufacturingandFractalFactorieshaveemerged[1,2]whichcontainideasratherreminiscentofthosetobefoundinthefieldofMulti-AgentSystems[3,4].Manufacturingtasksareanalogoustooperationscarriedoutondata,withinthecontextofplanning,schedulingandcontrol.Also,complexprod
6、uctsareassembledatphysicallydistributedworkshopsorproductionfacilities,sothecomponentsmustbetransportedbetweenthem.Thisisanalogoustocommunicationofdatabetweenprocessorsinaparallelcomputer,whichthusalsomakescleartheanalogybetweenworkshopsandprocessors.Theremainderofthispaperreportsanattempttoexploi
